Anthea Callen explains that the separation of home and factory work gave birth to female domesticity. It was a labor of love. The ideal Victorian woman was seen as a vessel of morality and guardian of the home.
Women of all classes were expected to aspire to this ideal. One of the few forms of work deemed acceptable was artwork. The domestication of women was further propelled by the ideals of the Arts and Craft movement by John Ruskin. This separation of the feminine ideals removed all authenticity from women as artists.

Women were exiled from the creative aspects of the crafts and limited in the types of crafts that were options to train in. Few women made the pots they decorated, and almost none became wrought iron workers, stonemasons, or plaster workers.
At the turn of the century there were two types of models of art instruction being taught. Art schools were either industrial applied arts schools or they were fine art schools.
The industrial art school typically included architecture, stained glass, brass working, drafting, lithographs, or art education. Women of the working and middle classes, who were needed in the labor force, studied applied art at decorative art school, competed more equally, and were able to attend the same arts and crafts classes with men, except for the study of the nude. The female student was considered to need less formal art education due to their intuitive nature.
There was a common belief that women could create art that was beautiful, but not essential Zimmerman, , pg. Women were encouraged to study applied and decorative arts and women that entered into the fine arts academies were seen as unequal in abilities.
The guilds were another social milieu during the Arts and Craft movements that were male dominated. The guilds were founded of the ideals of the medieval institutions.
